Oct 24th, 2017, Austin, TX : The final game of the league season fittingly pitted first place Lone Star (on 12 pts) against second placed St Stephens (on 11 pts) in a game that would decide the destination of the trophy. The home team being 1 point behind knew that a win was needed to capture the trophy and in front of a large and vociferous crowd an entertaining battle ensued.
The first half saw Lone Star (which is a team made up of kids attending schools in Austin that do not play Field Hockey) taking the game to their more illustrious opponents. A strong midfield with Aoibhin Murdoch and Lola Farago were dominant and Mia Corso was particularly effective in releasing the speedy Kayla Fink down the right wing. The goal, when it came, was an excellent passing move that saw Mia Petruzzi finding Hannah Hollenbeck on the far post to beat the excellent St Stephens keeper Kendall Dowd with a deft sweep in. Several more chances including a well struck shot from the top of the D by Aoibhin Murdoch were all well saved leaving the score at half time 1:0.
The second half saw a much closer affair with St Stephens hungry to take control of the game – Zoe Schaffer, Channing Allen and Eliza Cho were noticeably trying to guide the game for the Spartans while at the other end they survived a few more scares with further saves from Kendall Dowd. With 10 minutes left some real Spartan pressure saw the youngest player on the field, the Lone Star keeper Tatiana (Tati) Maldei-Stumm called into real action with a couple of quick saves while Lily Christie and Tati’s elder sister Nastasia were both very cool under pressure. A last minute time out, some fancy stick work from Priya Jhaveri and Daisy Botkin and an all out St Stephens attack were not enough to breach Lone Stars defenses and a well deserved, if hard fought, victory went to the Littlehorns.
St Mary’s Hall from San Antonio, finished 3rd in the league table in what was a very successful inaugural competition.
